a well written story of school life and the ups and downs of friendship, with intriguing mysteries real historical characters brought vividly to life ... much broader appeal than just sports fans as it is packed full of fun, action and adventure
- * Children's Books Ireland Recommended Reading Guide *

an old-fashioned adventure story ... The descriptions of rugby practice sessions and matches would make little sense to anyone unfamiliar with the game, but these sections are quite short and the mystery and adventure elements of the book are enough to keep more general readers interested ...The narrative moves at a brisk pace and the language is clear enough for readers of nine and over. On the whole, a very enjoyable book
- * Historical Novel Society *

a great book ... gripping ... a brilliant read for ages 8 years upwards ... a knowledge of rugby is not necessary but could make it more enjoyable
