Jimmy Smyth graced the hurling fields during the years 1943-1970 in the colours of St. Flannan's College, Ruan, Clare, and Munster. Hurling people of a certain age refer to him, in a very complimentary fashion, simply as "Smyth". The Ruan man played in numerous positions; wing-back, centre-back, centre-field, wing, centre, and full-forward. A prolific scorer, a leader, and an oustanding sportsman, he was admired by both opponents and teammates alike.

In later life, he collected songs and ballads, and published two books of collections. This book pays homage to Smyth, the sportsman and the scholar.

"I wouldn't have lasted as long with Clare or Munster without Ruan - the club is important. We had a very high standard in Ruan.?" - Jimmy Smyth (1995, interview with author).
