This cheerful board book introduces young readers to the very basics of gaelic football and hurling. Photos of equipment and athletes are shown on block-coloured backgrounds, with single word descriptions included to explain the pictures. We see helmets, hurleys, boots and balls. A team photo demonstrates the size of a GAA squad, while simple images explain the difference between a point and a goal. The combination of a basic layout and vibrant colours are particularly appropriate for pre-literacy reading level, when children are learning how to hold a book, how to turn pages, and how to distinguish between words and pictures. The minimalist presentation is excellent for young children who are building their vocabulary, and by using one word per image, it offers the opportunity for readers to create their own narrative as they discuss what they see. Both boys and girls are represented as the pictures themselves offer a good gender balance, from a female Bainisteoir to a mixed club team. The non-fiction sports theme could appeal to those who have little interest in fictional illustrations, as they may find it easier to relate to real-life photos and scenarios. An avid GAA fan could elaborate on the content in terms familiar to a child, allowing them to share their interests with even the smallest supporters. A great addition to the family library and the perfect starting point for both little readers and future players!
