The Story of Clare and its People – A History of Local Government in Ireland’s Banner County 1570-2020 has been produced by Clare County Council to mark the 450th anniversary this year of the establishment of County Clare by Elizabeth 1st.
An artwork of a secret meeting of Clare County Council taking place in a hay barn in Spancilhill during the height of the War of Independence adorns the book cover which focuses on the history of local government in County Clare. The painting was produced by Tomás O’ Maoldomhnaigh.
The book features a range of interesting and previously unheard of stories relating to local governance in Clare from the Ardnacrusha scheme and Shannon Airport to the Council’s management of the health service to the temporary abolition of Clare County Council in 1942.
