THE STORY OF DROMOLAND features a huge cast of fascinating characters. From the outside, it’s a handsome castle, but there’s far more to it than that. The people who dwelt inside, the O’Brien family, lived lives of uncommon variety. They were good, they were bad, they were everything except boring. And across 1000 years. Through every twist and turn of Irish history, there was usually an O’Brien involved, in some way big or small.
There was a Rebel and a Saint, a Gambler and a Purveyor of Fashionable Hats. One was a great Painter, one an able Politician. But there was also
an alcoholic, a drug addict and several adulterers.
They clocked up debts, were dragged into scandals and fought in frivolous duels over nothing. On top of all that, were many notable visitors. And a retinue of domestic servants, working behind the scenes.
Gathered here are some of those stories and the photos to go with them. Like all good tales, they begin ‘Long Ago in Dromoland…..’
